Custom Orthotics for You

A black female holding orthotics she got from a chiropractor in Guelph providing affordable orthotics in Cambridge Ontario

What is an Orthotic?

A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles; but, are biomechanical medical devices that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes – they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole – and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

What Can I Expect from an Orthotic Assessment?

If it has been determined whether you would benefit from an orthotic, prior to the assessment please call your insurance provider to determine what parameters need to be met before an order is made. Some insurance companies may require a medical prescription for an orthotic. Best to check first so there are no surprises later when it comes to coverage and insurance submissions!

An orthotic assessment will include a detailed case history and physical examination. Following this, we will complete a gait analysis; we will observe how you walk and how the surrounding joints react to different timed positions of the foot while you perform a few steps down a hallway.

If it is deemed that an orthotic may provide benefit, we will use a 3D volumetric cast that is made of foam to take a neutral impression of your foot. We will then discuss ways that we can modify the orthotic to suit your individual needs. Following this, we will ship the orthotic out to our local manufacturer for development.

When we receive the orthotic back, we will have you come into the office for a fitting and provide instructions for how to incorporate the use of your new orthotic into your everyday life. We will ask you to touch base with us after two weeks of use to ensure the orthotic is comfortable and that the symptoms are improving for what it was designed to help with.

How Much Does an Orthotic Cost?

Because orthotics are custom made devices, they can be expensive. We charge $385 for our orthotics, this includes the assessment, casting, shipping, manufacturing, and dispensing of the orthotic. If you require any further modifications within the first 3 months of the orthotic, we will also cover these changes.
